The "BLAUdern" project located in the 21st district in Vienna (Austria), extends over 2 vacant lots at Donaufelder Straße and Ferdinand-Pölz-Gasse,
which are connected by a narrow courtyard.
The plot was quite small with an area of 800m" and difficult to build on due to narrow width of only 12 to 15 m and the vacant lots.
It was important to the architect and the developer to create a place where residents could meet and communicate with each other.
Therefore, despite the difficult building site, an underground car park was built to create an inviting and friendly courtyard above it,
which can be used as a place for exchange and as a communal area for all peaople in the building.
The proximity to the Danube inspired us to paint the street facades blue. The interplay between the public street and the private courtyard interior
is reflected in a different color scheme:
The dark color on the outside front is intended to symbolize the hard shell, the light inside the soft core. Elements, such as the cement tiles in the community building and a blue bassena in the courtyard are intended as a reminiscence of the Viennese Wilhelminian style houses.
The railings on the courtyard side are made of perforated sheet metal and reflect the pattern of the cement tiles in the community building.
A total of 26 apartments with 1740m2 of usable space were built. Almost all of the apartments extend from the street side to the courtyard, so that they have at least one quiet side. The apartment typologies of the 1 to 4-room apartments are very divers, from single-story apartments to maisonettes to split-level apartments over three levels.
